Understanding Release Types

1 min read

When uploading music, it’s important to choose the correct release type. This affects how your music is displayed across stores and streaming platforms. ChilClick provides guidance, though each platform may apply its own rules.

1. Albums #

A release is generally classified as an album if it meets either of the following:

  • 7 or more tracks
  • Total duration of 30 minutes or longer

Albums are ideal for full-length projects or comprehensive collections of music.

2. EP (Extended Play) #

An EP is typically shorter than an album and fits one of these criteria:

  • 4-6 tracks, with a total duration under 30 minutes
  • 1-3 tracks, where at least one track is 10 minutes or longer, and total duration is still under 30 minutes

EPs are perfect for shorter projects or focused thematic releases.

3. Single #

A single generally includes:

  • 1-3 tracks, with each track under 10 minutes in length

Singles are commonly used to highlight a particular song or release a preview ahead of a larger project.

4. Compilation #

A compilation may be categorized differently depending on the platform, but usually applies if:

  • The release features four or more primary artists
  • 50% or more of the tracks have been previously released
  • Tracks are collected from an 18-month release period or longer

Compilations are suitable for curated collections, collaborative projects, or themed releases.
