Do I Need Permission to Release a Cover Song?

< 1 min read

Yes. If the song was written by someone else, you must have permission to use it.

Why a License Is Required #

Any time you record or release a song you did not write yourself, the original songwriter still owns the rights. This applies even if:

  • You are not charging money
  • The release is free
  • The project is personal, charity, or non-commercial

The rules are the same in all cases.

When a License Is NOT Needed #

You do not need a license if the song is officially in the public domain.
Public domain songs are works where copyright protection has expired or does not exist.

Important Reminder #

  • Owning the recording does not mean you own the song
  • Changing the style or arrangement does not remove the need for permission
  • Uploading without proper rights can lead to takedowns or account issues
